In hair colour, ammonia it is an alkalizing agent, with a pH level of 11-13. This helps to open the outer hair layer, by raising the hairs PH level to a 10.  

Instead of ammonia, Sophic uses Cocamide MEA as our pH adjuster. It is an alkalizing agent like ammonia, but with a lower working pH level of around 8.9-9.5. 

Cocamide MEA  performs the same action as Ammonia but without... 

• Causing scalp irritation or itchiness  
• Destroying hair health 
• Release pungent smells  

Sophic colour use synthetic colour pigment PTDs. 

Synthetic colour pigment that is used in every professional hair colour. It begins colourless and requires oxygen for it to become a dye.  

It is not just used in hair colour though, but in henna tattoos, printed paper, oil, black clothes, even eyeliner. The darker the colour, the more pigment, and the higher chance of developing an allergic reaction. These can range from a mild reaction, like an itchy rash on the eyelids or rims of ears, progressing to severe dermatitis which has been known to cause scarring, to the more severe reactions of asthma, anaphylaxis and renal failure. After reaction subsides, a lifelong sensitisation to PPD or PTD is likely.  

Manufacturers have begun creating products with para-toulenediamene sulfates (PTDS) as a substitute to PPD, which has proven effective in replacing the ingredient without posing the same level of risk. Studies show that more than half of users who are allergic to PPD did not experience any adverse effects to products using a PTD substitute.
